How to celebrate a housiversary

Many of the celebrations, trends and other novelties of the social media explosion focus on life events. Say hello to the housiversary! Yes, it's currently a trend on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and beyond. Much like a birthday or marriage, the day you close on your home is a milestone worth celebrating.

Here are some ways to make the date special year after year:

Show off the keys to your castle. Finally receiving the keys to your new home is a big deal, one to be commemorated with a photo and post that can be reposted on your housiversary.

Commission a portrait. Have a professional picture drawn of the house and hang it on the wall of your great room or office.

Feast like the day you moved in. That usually means food in a box because who wants to cook at the end of a long move-in day?

Throw a potluck. Everyone loves an excuse for a house party, and it's a great way to get to know your neighbors better.

Take time to reflect. What has this house meant to you over the past year? What goals, plans or projects do you have for your home in the upcoming year?

Dreaming of a new home? If you've been considering a move-up purchase or are wanting to downsize, let's talk!

Transform your bath with luxury features

Showers aren't merely for freshening up, and mirrors do more than simply reflect your image. Today's homeowners are turning their baths and showers into mini-spas. Here are five popular features that can transform your bath and add value to your home.

Radiant floor heating – Having a warm floor when you step out of the shower tops the trends list for consumers, according to the latest National Kitchen + Bath Association Design Trends Report.

Zero-transition entry – This safety feature not only reduces the chance of tripping and falling but also adds a sleek and modern appearance to the bathroom.

Home steam shower or sauna – A pricey purchase, but either of these can provide the ultimate in healthy relaxation.

Innovative lighting – Mood lighting can ease the transition from your cozy bed to waking daylight.

Smart vanity mirror – Tech has reigned supreme in kitchens for years. Now, it's the bathroom's turn. Touch-screen mirror features can include LED lighting, Bluetooth speakers and a TV screen.

A guide to fertilizing your lawn

Protect your property's curb appeal with a lush, green lawn.

When to fertilize: According to lawn-care experts, most lawns need to be fertilized a minimum of two times each year, preferably fall and spring. Your local lawn and garden center can provide guidelines for the type of grass growing in your yard. The best time of day to apply fertilizer is in the late afternoon when the grass is dry.

The best fertilizer: The three numbers on a bag of fertilizer indicate the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, respectively, in the product. Nitrogen-rich fertilizers are great for established lawns. Phosphorus promotes root growth in new lawns. Potassium encourages overall plant health and is recommended when fertilizing in the fall.

How to fertilize: It's wise to buy or rent a broadcast spreader that will make the job go faster and smoother. Be sure to adjust the lever to match the recommended flow setting on the fertilizer bag. For best results, start at the outer edges of the lawn and work inward.

Décor tips for book lovers

When it comes to loving books, where you read can mean almost as much as what you read. Creatively displaying books can also enhance your home's overall aesthetic by adding character, memories and warmth.

Consider these tips on setting up home décor so that readers can get lost in an engaging book for hours on end.

Get creative with where you display books. Hardback books can be a fun, inexpensive way to add interest to any room. Search garage sales and thrift stores to find ones you like. Try to display books in unconventional ways. For example, arrange books by matching the spine color instead of the size or subject.

Keep it practical. Choose shelving that can bear the weight of thick, hardback books. Be sure to arrange comfortable seating near plenty of natural or artificial light for ideal reading conditions.

Tell your own story. The combination of books displayed on shelves can tell a lot about the person who lives there. What do your books say about the special qualities and unique interests that you possess?
