4 Ways To Cultivate Friendships With Your Neighbors

Building strong, lasting relationships with your neighbors is possible with some time and initiative. Consider trying these four ideas to get the ball rolling.

  1. Start a conversation. If you're feeling uncertain about where to start, try making a comment about the weather, ask about your neighbor's work or family, or compliment their yard or home.
  2. Spend time outdoors. The more visible you can be out in your front yard or community areas, the more likely you are to meet the people around you.
  3. Ask for help. People love feeling useful, so consider asking your neighbors for advice on a home maintenance issue, information on the best attractions in the community or recommendations for a trusted service provider.
  4. Connect online. Start a Facebook group or connect on the Nextdoor app to communicate about neighborhood-related topics and to offer or request assistance. With your neighbors' permission, you could also create and distribute a directory of phone numbers and emails for residents in your area.
